It is important to take care of your hearing. The better you care for it, the less likely it is going to be that you experience hearing loss later in life. Or if you do, you are much less likely to find that it is particularly pronounced.

To take better care of your hearing, it’s a good idea to limit some of the everyday activities that can ultimately end up harming your hearing. In this post, we are going to look at what some of those might be, so you can ensure that you are avoiding them as much as possible.

Listening through earphones

If you regularly listen to music or podcasts through earphones, you will want to take care of the volume as you do so. If you accidentally have the volume up too high, then you could be causing harm to your hearing in the long-term. You might not even be aware that it is happening and you might feel as though it’s not too loud at all. But over time, you are going to find that it affects your hearing adversely.

You don’t have to avoid listening through earphones or headphones. But you should aim to keep it down slightly and to be careful with the volume as you are listening. As long as you do that, you should reduce any potential damage that might otherwise be caused to your hearing.

Concerts and other events

There are many public events which are notoriously particularly bad for your hearing, such as concerts and nightclubs. If you are going to go to these, you can do a few things in particular to make sure that you are not going to cause long-term damage to your hearing. First of all, be sure to avoid spending too much time too close to the speakers, especially the sub-woofers where the bass emanates from. That should help a lot.

Beyond that, you might even want to consider wearing earplugs while you are out at the club or at concerts. It doesn’t detract from your enjoyment, but it does help to protect your hearing in the long term, so it is certainly worth considering. Most people find that this is all they need to do to protect their ears.

Finally, consider reducing the frequency you attend such events. They will make a difference to your hearing over time, often so subtly and slowly that you don’t notice until it is too late.

Power tools and construction

Sometimes, your job is going to be the thing that is causing harm to your hearing. If you work in construction, then you are going to need to be especially careful of your hearing. This is particularly important if you use power tools, which can often emit sounds which are incredibly loud. You should make sure to use ear protectors or ear defenders whenever you are using these tools and whenever you are near someone else using one too. That way, you can hold on to your hearing for longer.

It’s not just the power tools that you need to think about, either. If you are driving a digger or a similar machine, you might want to make sure that you are protecting your ears in these cases too, just to make sure you are doing everything you can.

Inner-city living

If you happen to live in the middle of a city, it’s likely that the noise levels are high enough to damage your hearing. However, you might be so used to the noise that you barely even notice it anymore, which might fool you into thinking that it’s not a problem. It is a problem, however, and you should aim to protect your ears in whatever way you can if you live in this kind of environment, whether by keeping the windows closed during the day or wearing earbuds at least some of the time.

Workplace ambient noise

All kinds of workplaces can be very noisy, and they can end up damaging your hearing if you are not careful. Wherever you work, be sure to protect yourself first and foremost, by whatever reasonable means necessary. This is going to help you in the long-run, and it’s something that you should always be aware of as you choose jobs, too.
